James Winsoar set up the first mobile phone ringtone back in 1999 sending mobile melodies to Nokia phone owners. Times are changing though, and his company - Phat Tonez is leading the way forward by beginning to offer new "Polyphonic" ringtones.

A polyphonic ringtone is just like a regular ringtone except that you can play several notes at the same time, for a more musical result. Polyphonic ringtones can sound just like a small orchestra with several different instruments and sound effects.

The latest Nokia 3510, Sony Ericsson P800, and "Danger" devices, are able to receive full SP MIDI files for use as ringtones. The phones contain no less than a small sound card with various instruments, which means that their ringtones can include bass, piano, guitar and drums in a single melody. The vibration track is also included which means that we will be able to make the phone vibrate in time to the music. That's a major step forward.

As well as these manufacturers, other phone companies such as Motorola, Sanyo, Siemens, and Alcatel are all expected to be releasing SP MIDI-compatible mobile phones and devices which will be able to receive polyphonic ringtones.

SP MIDI files are not sent to the phone by SMS, as with traditional ringtones, but over WAP - therefore phones must also be WAP compliant and the user must have a service plan that includes internet access to be able to download the new Midi ringtones.

Phat Tonez aim to be the number one supplier of polyphonic ringtones by making their entire back catalogue of music available to other ringtone suppliers. More info >>>
